Fineness is a measure of a precious metal's purity, and it's based on parts per thousand. A metal rates
1,000 is described as fine or pure. 750 or 18k is 75 percent pure. A precious metal stamped "950" is very nearly pure.

People use the term karat to state gold's fineness. Don't confuse "karat" with the term "carat," a measure of gem weight.
In the U.S, the most popular gold alloy used in jewelry is 14k. It contains only 58 percent of gold.
